Captain Morgan Spiced Rum

As you place the bottle of Captain Morgan on the counter in front of me normally the first words you will hear from me are, "Have we had the Root Beer Discussion?"

I bet you are wondering, "How in the world did she even think to try it with root beer!" Well, let me tell you.  My sweet wonderful husband had surprised me with a bottle of Captain. But the dumb ass had forgotten to buy me a Coke to go with it! At this point after a day with my first child and work I was more then ready for a drink! His reaction to me asking about the coke was rather humorous. He of course apologized profusely! Opening the fridge I had found the root beer and said, "What the hell, why not!"

This was the best mistake my hubby ever made. LOL! But if he had remember the coke I would never had discovered this amazing drink.

The proportions are always up to you. But I suggest making it as you would a Screwdriver (vodka and OJ). A quarter to one third of a glass full of ice the rest root beer. I have been known to go half and half with mine! The trick to make it super smooth and delicious is to use A&W Root Beer!

Different Root Beers I've tried with Captain Morgan

Barq's - This is my least favorite.
IBC- Is ok. Smoother then Barq's
Store Brand- is my mid range and preferred if I'm unable to get A&W or on a budget

A&W- Is by far my top favorite!

Now I have also had Captain with IBC cream soda and Ginger Ale.
Cream Soda- To sweet.
Ginger Ale- Tastes like cream soda and is pretty smooth.

Root Beer Float

Pint Glass (Your average glass)
Fill at least halfway with ice to all the way

1/4 of the glass of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
The rest A&W Root Beer
Stir really well and continue to stir as you sip on this delicious relaxing drink!

Enjoy!

Magic Hat Beer

#9
Not Quite Pale Ale
OK, to say the least this beer took me by storm! Popping open this sucker was a dream come true! The scent of it was so subtle and full of flavor I was surprised. I kept smelling it trying to catch that beer smell I don't care for. Wasn't there!!! The first sip put me in heaven. 100% smooth from the first taste to the ending note! Believe me, it took me half of the beer before I would believe it would stay that smooth through the entire bottle!

Are you a cider lover as I am....then this beer is a MUST try!

One of my favorite things about this, was the dry ending note. How it brought the full subtle notes of the flavor and scent together perfectly. To leave it lingering upon your palette. So take your time to savor this smooth subtle beer. It will be worth your time!

Humble Patience
Irish Style Red

I wasn't sure what to expect from this beer. But I was excited to say the least! I bet you can imagine it! There I stand in my kitchen, a smile on my face as I pop open this bottle of beer! -pop, flip, plop- goes the cap! Lifting the bottle to my nose I breathe in deeply.....a very classic quality scent! Score 1 so far! The flavor hits your mouth as an avalanche. I at first didn't think I would like it. But as most of the beers from Magic Hat have done, it surprised me upon the second sip and the third. I can't quite place the flavors, but the multi-layers give this beer personality. As most of the higher quality beers I have been tasting, as this beer warms up the flavors begin to become more alive! I Did drink half of this beer before I thought to sit down and write about it. The rich light flavor of this beer is a definitive plus!

Ummm....I didn't like this one. But if you like I.P.A. Beers give it a try! So far I have been impressed with the quality of Magic Hat's beers so far!

Lipton Tea

Just to let you guys in on a little secret I'm a southern belle through and through! I love Tea! Be it hot or cold, sweet or unsweetened...though sweet is preferred! I love it! So you can understand my excitement when I saw Lipton had made a variety of flavors! There is something for everyone. Lipton is a very high quality tea that has the perfect price tag for Tea lovers everywhere! So sit back, hold onto your tea pots and be prepared to be WOWED!
http://www.liptont.com/our_products/pyramid/index.aspx

Lipton Pyramid Bags have such a simple design to them. The flavor from these little guys are just fabulous! I normally sweeten my tea with honey and let it set for at the very least 10 minutes. If you want to make a potful try using a coffee pot! Place 1 tea bag for each cup of water (4cups water 4 teabags). Let the pot sit at least 30min to 1 hour! I prefer a very strong taste to my tea so I will let it set for longer. Remember to place the tea bags IN the pot and to leave it turned on so that the heat will help diffuse the flavor faster and more strongly!

Once you've reached your desired strength level another option is to ice it! All of these flavors taste even better iced! Make a batch the night before for work the next day. It's a healthier choice then coffee (I still LOVE my coffee) and perfect for the summer!

Bavarian Wild Berry
Black Tea
This has a great mixture of blackberries, blueberries and Raspberries.
This tends to be a little stronger and sweeter.

Mandarin Orange
Green Tea
Light Refreshing mandarin orange flavor balanced with the green tea! For those orange lovers!
Very light tea.

Blueberry and Pomegranate
White Tea
This combo is mixed so well together it's hard to tell where one flavor begins and the other ends.
Light tea with a strong flavor.

Island Mango and Peach  (My personal Favorite cold!)
White tea
A great combo of the two flavors! First you are hit with the Peach and then the mango to soothe the taste buds!
Light and sweet this tea is just amazing all the way around!

Enjoy trying something new and saving some money while you are at it!

Magic Hat's Hex Apple Spice Cake

As I was looking up information about Magic Hat's Hex beer I came across this on their website!
http://www.magichat.net/recipes/night_living_dead/hex_apple_and_cranberry_spice_cake

Now for those of you who might actually know me, know how I love to put my own twist on other people's recipes! That is exactly what I've done with this!  As you can see there is a link above for the recipe. I have also copied and pasted it below. Everything in parentheses ( ) are my adjustments and additions! I have also created Two additional glazes as well as adding to the original here. I hope you guys have fun trying them both out! A great excuse to buy a 6 pack of beer!

Hex Glaze: This glaze brings out the flavor of the beer in the cake, as well as the citrus undertones.

360 Double Chocolate Glaze: My own creation, but I wasn't as impressed with it. For the chocolate lovers you might enjoy this glaze on a chocolate cake instead.

Lemon Glaze: It brings out the citrus tones. But I feel it overpowers the actual cake.

Out of the three I do prefer the Hex Glaze. My own creation. For young children try serving it plain or make a vanilla glaze instead. With a pinch of cinnamon sprinkled over it. There are many many options available! My husband enjoyed it with vanilla ice cream. So Get creative!
Dottie ^_^

P.S. Let the cake cool before attempting to take it out of the pan as the recipe says...I didn't and my top came off! ;) But it's delicious warm so try heating it up when you serve it to family and friends!

HEX APPLE SPICE CAKE

RECIPE

nonstick vegetable oil spray                                               (real butter and flour for the pan)
2 cups grated tart apples (2 or 3 apples)                             (cubed 4 apples with peel on)
1 cup chopped, toasted pecans                                            (Walnuts and butter toasted stove top instead.)
2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon                                              (added pumpkin spice and allspice. left out the cloves)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 and 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
3/4 cup Magic Hat Hex (6 ounces)
juice of 1/2 lemon (about 2 tablespoons)                             (Used a tangerine instead. juiced it fresh)
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup sweetened, dried cranberries                                      (cut up the tangerine instead of using cranberries)
zest of 1 lemon                                                                     (no zest)

For the glaze:

1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
several teaspoons orange juice or lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

• Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 12-cup Bundt pan with cooking spray and set aside.

• Grate the apples to make 2 cups. Toss into a colander and allow to drain while you continue.

• Sprinkle the pecans in a baking pan with sides and bake for 5 to 7 minutes, until toasty-smelling. Set aside.

• In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and cloves. Set aside.

• In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugars together. Add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Add the Magic Hat Hex, lemon juice and vanilla and beat until combined. Add the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Stir in the apples, nuts, cranberries, and lemon zest.

• Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on wire rack for 20 minutes. Invert onto a cake plate. Cool thoroughly.

Make the glaze:

• Put the confectioners’ sugar in a small bowl and stir in the juice, a teaspoon at a time, until a smooth icing forms; it should be the consistency of warm honey. Drizzle over the cake.

• Allow to set at least 10 minutes. Serve.

TASTING NOTES: Hints of toffee and caramel in Magic Hat Hex work with the warm spices, fresh apples and slightly tart cranberries in this seasonal extravaganza of a cake.

YIELD: 10 to 12 servings

Additional Glazes!

Hex Glaze: 1/2 cup powder sugar. 1Tbls stick butter melted, add beer until you have the consistancy you desire. To thicken add more sugar.

360 Double Chocolate Glaze: 1/2 cup powder sugar. 1Tbls stick butter melted. add vodka until desired consistancy you desire.

Lemon Glaze: 1/2 cup powder sugar, 1Tbls  stick butter melted, add lemon juice until desired consistancy.

Coffee

I am an avid Coffee lover. As is my little girl, Marilyn Deville. She started to drink coffee as soon as she started walking and got her hands on her Mami's (Grandma) coffee mug and took a sip. Ever since then we have to pry her little fingers off of our coffee mugs if we want to be able to drink any ourselves!

Today we tried out Dunkin Donuts Cinnamon Spice. It's a very delicious strong coffee. So be careful as to the amount of grinds you use! I love cinnamon in my coffee, so was very happy when my husband brought this home as a surprise for me! The flavor has a very strong cinnamon taste, unlike some of the brands out there that say cinnamon. No need to add any extra! Extrememly happy with this flavor from Dunkin Donuts, as is my little Marilyn!

(9/6/2011)

My sweet husband will bring me home new brands and flavors to try as a surprise! So this past weekend he brought me home something exceptionally delicious!

New England Coffee
http://www.newenglandcoffee.com

Blueberry Cobbler: I wasn't prepared for how delicious this was going to be! I'm normally not much of a fan of blueberry. But oh my god! This was full of flavor and creaminess! I add sugar and cream to mine and it was as if I was having dessert in a cup! On the bag it suggests to try it cold. Well, why the hell not? It's even better COLD!  I prefer it cold actually. I use either cream or milk with sugar over ice.

Hazelnut Creme Decaf: My hubbs knows how much I love hazelnut coffee. Which is a LOT! Hehehe. I was rather disappointed at first to see that it was decaf. But after trying it and having a day where I didn't want the extra caffeine. I was grateful to have it. The flavor was just as intense as the regular caffeinated coffee. I was very happy and surprised!

I'm looking forward to trying the other flavors as well. To let you in on a little secret...I like this brand better then any of the name brands so far! It's just that good!

Eight O'clock Coffee
http://www.eightoclock.com/
This was another pleasant surprise for me. I had tried the regular a long time ago, but wasn't that impressed. I had tied the hazelnut on a whim, one because the price was right, as well as curiosity. The flavor was nice and strong. A wonderful budget coffee, right up there with the name brands. :)

Holiday Flavored Coffee
With the Holidays being here so many flavor options are becoming available! How awsome is that! To say that I'm in heaven is an understatement! Mmmmmm.......coffee on a cold day is just the bestest thing ever!

On whim I decided to try out pumpkin coffee. I'm thinking "Awsome! Can't wait to try this out!" Well...not so impressed with this holiday flavor.

Archer Farms (Target)
Where's the flavor? It was smelling pretty good while it was brewing...but the flavor I was looking for just wasn't there! To say the least... disappointed.
Dunkin Donuts
This was actually pretty good. But I wouldn't buy more then one bag. Once again I just wasn't very impressed with the strength of the flavor. I was looking for the "Pow! In your face taste buds!" kind of flavor. But, very happy to have a bag of this Pumpkin Spice coffee anyways!

Private Selection (Kroger)
Chocolate Raspberry....oh my this flavor was amazing! I'm not a big raspberry fan, but adding a little bit of creamer to this....it was as if I were having a decadent dessert in my coffee mug! As it brews the smell just lures you to the kitchen and to the coffee pot itself. I stood there like an idiot waiting for it to finish brewing! A must try!

Millstone
Now, this is my favorite flavor of the season! Of course my wonderful hubby brought this home to me as a surprise. As he did with the chocolate raspberry! The bag was unmarked and when I opened it and took a deep breath I was in Heaven! Peppermint! The scent of this freshly ground....yes he ground it fresh at the store for me!!!....pulled me in! I was so eager to get to work to try it out and share! Of course my boss didn't like this flavor and made fun of me! The booger! hehehehe. But, out of all of the flavors out there, this is a must have for Christmas morning!

Dunkin Donuts
Strawberry Shortcake.....to say the least....Heaven. I really wasn't sure what I was going to think about this flavor. I'm not a huge strawberry fan when it comes to drinks. But this seriously tastes just like a strawberry shortcake! Especially if you add a little creamer and sugar to taste! Grab some glazed donuts and you've got a breakfast of champions! This is a must try! One of my top favorite flavors!

Easy Iced Coffee
Why waste money on having someone make you iced coffee when you can easily do it at home! Also try making it the night before without the ice and just leave it in the fridge for the morning!

Brew your favorite flavor of coffee....try hazelnut!
Using your favorite mug: Pour a 3/4 cup of coffee.
Add your usual amount of cream and sugar.
 Fill the rest with milk.
Then in another glass full of ice pour the hot coffee!
Stir and enjoy! Add more ice as needed.
Try using chocolate milk instead of regular milk!

You can find me doing this at work it's so easy!

Summer Tropical Storm

A bright creamy refreshing mixed drink! It takes your taste buds by storm! First hitting them with the the smooth taste of lemon! Then the sweet taste of pina coloda and rum storm in to overtake and dominate! Believe it or not the three tastes blend perfectly together to make a creamy make me smile kind of drink! Don't believe me? Try it out!

This is one of my original recipes, so I would love some feed back!
Dottie ^_^

Use a Pint glass for measurements.

3/4 Mayfield lemon Ice Cream
1/4 pina coloda mix
1/4 coconut rum....or more it's to taste!
Add ice.

Blend it up, maybe add a little more ice and there ya go! If it is still to thick add more RUM! or mix depending on your preference. A fun drink to mess around with.

Also try adding pineapple juice as well!

Enjoy! ^_^
